My mom recently told me about internet.hughesnet.com which has turned out to be a real lifesaver. I moved out here to be more with nature but it turns out I just really miss the convenience of living so close to a town and I wish I was able to do a lot of the things I used to be able to do like walk next door and get a coffee or go out at night and take the subway in. I know this is just a phase and it’s good for me to be out here on my own with so much time to think…I thought about it enough, though, and I’m probably going to start looking to sell the house in the next year or so and get back in the city. I don’t know that it’s actually going to happen because the market’s so bad but I guess I can’t live here forever just because I’m scared I’m going to lose money in the short term. I guess I didn’t know I wasn’t country!

Yesterday we discussed some of the big items that you can give to mom for Mother’s Day to use in her garden. Today we are going to discuss some ideas for mom that are a little smaller and perhaps more feasible for your budget. So here are some of our favorite gardening gift ideas for mom here at Her Gardening Blog:
Give mom a new set of hand tools for her garden. She will enjoy using them as she makes things just a little more beautiful. A good trowel and spade will go a long way in helping her to plant and care for her precious plants. We liked this Gardening Tool Kit that allows mom to sit on the seat so her clothes won’t get dirty.
You can’t go wrong with a new book or two about the garden. There are several that we love and feel should be included in every gardener’s library. One of our favorite picks for mom is P. Allen Smith’s Container Gardens: 60 Container Recipes to Accent Your Garden.
Protect mom’s hands with a new pair of gardening gloves. We recommend a pair such as Atlas 370 Garden Club Gloves. Assorted Colors – 4 Pack. Size Medium. These gloves are comfortable, yet stylish. They will also protect her hands from the wear and tear that gardening can wreak on her gentle hands. She will appreciate that you thought enough of her to protect her hands from the elements while she gardens.
Pamper mom with special soaps for her hands. She will love to indulge in these fragrant treats as she cleans her hands after a hard day’s work in the garden. Our favorite soap is All Natural Aloe Vera Soap in Lavender Scent. We think your mom will appreciate the fragrant aroma and will find it to be soothing and calming to her spirit and mind.
What better way to indulge your mom than to give her a special candle to enjoy? She will love the calming fragrance and the serenity that a great candle can bring to the soul. We love Seda France – Cutting Garden Candle . There is nothing better than watching the gentle flicker of a candle flame after working in the garden.
If you are feeling especially generous, you may want to include all of these great ideas in a gift basket for mom. She will truly feel indulged this Mother’s Day and you can smile as you become her favorite child all year long.
What are some other ideas you have for indulging your mom this Mother’s Day? What are some of her favorite things for the garden?

If your mom loves to spend time in her garden, why not help her create a sanctuary that she can enjoy? There are many different things available on the market today that will help you to give your mom a mothers day gift to use in her garden. Here are a few of the bigger ideas we had here at Her Gardening Blog:
Help your mom escape to a musical retreat with a new wind chime for her garden. She will love the soft twinkling sounds that will emit from the chimes. There are several different styles to choose from and each chime will play a musical song all of its own. One of our favorite wind chimes are the Amazing Grace Chimes by
This can be as extravagant as you would like it to be. You could choose pieces that reflect your mother’s style. There are pieces which are intricate in design and there are pieces which are more functional. There are even pieces that you may choose just for the level of comfort they provide such as the Strathwood Chaise Lounge . Choose one individual piece or choose an entire matching set.
Give mom a gift that will last throughout all seasons in her garden. There are many different statuary figures to choose from like this Fishing Boy. And you are sure to find something that reflects your mother’s taste and personality. She will enjoy the lifelike figures and they will bring a smile to her face all year as she thinks of your thoughtfulness.

This week we are focusing on Mom and offering to you ideas to treat her right this Mothers Day. There are many different gifts that you can make for mom that will help her smile all season long. I found this great idea for a Mother’s Day Container by P. Allen Smith. Here is some of what he has to say to help you make this fabulous gift for that special mother in your life.
For a special gift your mother will enjoy all summer long, present her with this beautiful container garden you planted yourself. I designed this simple yet stunning arrangement with just three varieties of plants so you can easily create the same gorgeous results. The super-sized blooms of the New Guinea impatiens blend perfectly with the exquisitely colored fronds of the Japanese painted fern. Cascading along the front of the container is a variegated ivy called ‘Gloire de Marengo’. Its glossy green leaves are edged in creamy white, adding just the right sparkle to this shade loving composition.Materials:
18″ diameter terra cotta pot
small piece of window screen, pot shards or large gravel
16 quart bag of potting mix blended for containers
water retentive polymers*
slow release fertilizer*
(1) 10 – 12 inch hanging basket of lavender New Guinea impatiens
(1) gallon sized container of Japanese painted fern
(3) 6 inch pots of ?Gloire de Marengo’ ivy*If your soil mix contains water retentive polymers as well as slow release fertilizer, there is no need to add these ingredients.
Now in order to finish this project, I recommend visiting his site for the complete directions. You can find those directions here. That special mom in your life will love this planter and you will enjoy knowing that not only did you help to make her garden a little more beautiful, but you truly gave her a gift that is reflective of what is in your heart. You just can’t miss with that! What are some other ideas that you have for gifts for mom and her garden?

One of the most treasured aspects of Mothers Day is receiving a gift that your child has made. The gifts that we receive from out kids far outweigh any cost that may be involved, and these gifts become priceless to a mom. These gifts do not have to be expensive, and with a little bit of effort and a few supplies, you can help your kids make a gift for mom that is sure to bring a smile to her face and brighten up her garden.
My very favorite Mothers Day gift was a stepping stone that my son made for me one year. There are several kits available on the market today. The stepping stones are easy to make and your kids will enjoy making them. And mom? She will smile all year long each time she sees it in her garden.
Find a decorative planter such as this metal planter. Let your kids pick out a few plants from your garden center and plant it up for mom. When they are finished, your kids will have an inexpensive gift that will be sure to bring a smile to mom’s face.
If you are feeling adventurous, then help your kids make a bird house for mom. There are kits available for purchase and your kids will enjoy putting it together with your help and then decorating it for mom’s special day. It will bring hours of enjoyment throughout the year.
A relatively inexpensive idea is to make plant stakes for mom to use in the garden. With some popsicle sticks, glue and construction paper, your kids can make garden stakes or markers for mom to identify where seeds are planted. This short video will show you how:
